The Birthday Date… Mix it Up

Once you have kids, celebrations change. You’re still part of the festivities, but as a parent you are the background worker bee, the unnoticed bystander, and the bankroll for most parties and festive occasions. About the only thing you have left is your own birthday. Do yourself a favor and make it a date night!
I asked some of my readers on After the Bubbly to tell me about their most memorable/romantic birth-dates. Here are a few dos and don’ts I gathered from their experiences.
DO surprise your partner. To me, this is what it’s all about. Oh sure, we all love to go to the store, pick out our own gift, wrap it up and hand it to our spouse to give back to us, but it’s also nice to receive the unexpected every once in a while. Whether it’s the gift or the celebration itself – surprises make for memories.
DON’T share the same birthday. Just don’t. (Maybe this is more of a premarital counseling issue?) Sharing the same birthday turns your Very Special Day into yet another anniversary. Without even going into the astrological implications, suffice it to day it’s better to put all the focus on one person at a time! It may be too late for you, but teach your children to avoid marrying someone with the same birthday.
DO spring for dual massages. I cannot think of a better gift than time at the spa, especially if that includes hot oil and stones. For the gift that keeps on giving, invest in a regular monthly plan at a place like Massage Envy. Heaven!
DON’T forget a birthday no matter what. Tattoos are popular – get one if you have to! You do NOT want to be hearing the story thirty years from now about the time you completely forgot a birthday.
DO go all out. Celebrate in the most fabulous manner you can afford. You’re celebrating your very existence after all!
Recommended Birthday Spots in or Near NWA:
* Kansas City, MO. Between the Casinos and the shopping at the Plaza it is like a little Las Vegas within driving distance. (Kind of.)
* Carrabas in Rogers for Italian food. Tiramisu on your birthday? Yum!
* Branson. There really is something for everyone.
* James at the Mill. If you’ve never tried it, go for the tasting menu with wine! And make sure you also get a cab or rent a room at the inn!
* Kennedy Coffee in Bentonville. The best local coffee spot ever. (And I’m from Seattle, y’all!)
