Spend a Wonderful Weekend:
Devil’s Den State Park
February normally yields a few precious days that hold the promise of spring. But even if the day is cold you can take advantage of some great programs at Devil’s Den State Park. All programs are to be held on February 13, 2010 and are centered around birding. You’ll learn how to identify them, how to attract them to your yard and take place in the Great Backyard Bird Count. Some of the great activities that day include:
• Take part in the Backyard Bird Count. The park personnel will guide you and your family through a short course on bird identification and some beginning birding skills then you’ll use your new found knowledge to help catalog the nation’s bird population. For more info on the Great Backyard Bird Count check out http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc .
• Join Sandy Berger, former Arkansas Audubon Society President for an identification walk. Make sure to bring your binoculars and dress warmly. The walk will take about an hour.
• Watchable Winter Wildlife-Park Interpreter Adam will show you how to attract wildlife to your own back yard. This program is suitable for the entire family and the admission is free. It’s held in the Visitor Center Audio-Visual Room from 1pm-2pm.
• Story Time and Crafts-They’ll be reading Fine Feathered Friends from the Cat in the Hat learning library. After story time kids can make a craft that will help entice birds into their own yards. Story Time and Crafts will be held in the Visitor Center Audio-Visual Room from 3pm- 4pm.
• Birding Basics- Park Interpreter Adam Leslie will give everyone tips on identifying birds. Afterwards you’ll play games to test your new found knowledge. It will be held from 7pm-8pm.
If you’d like directions or more information you can contact the Devil’s Den State Park at (479) 761-3325 or devilsden@arkansas.com. If it happens to be one of those balmy days be sure to take advantage of the outside activities as well.
